EDIT: 2/17 @10:10AM...yeah that's right you piss of SAS and he's dropping his furry fist down hard on justice...
Just as I suspected the whole nonsense about Treyarch resetting MP ranks is total BS. I received two replies back from Activision support this morning, the first stating they would reply within 1 business day and then this one:

Thank you for contacting Activision technical support.
This is a temporary problem. They are working on fixing the issue now.
Included in this reply was this link for further info: <a href="http://www.callofduty.com/board/viewtopic....=31&t=88206" target="_blank">http://www.callofduty.com/board/viewtopic....=31&t=88206</a>
Or spelled out if you like:
Hello,
We’ve been following-up on some reports of two major issues: loss of save game data (mission progressions, Death Cards), and the arbitrary loss / complete reset of Multiplayer rank.
Today we can confidently say we’ve identified the source of both problems, and will be addressing this in the next Title Update.
Loss of Singleplayer save game data:
The first bug, with SP save game data, has to do with playing Split-Screen or System Link Co-Op with a friend, and picking up Death Cards. This action has caused an unusual data corruption with the save game files on the Xbox 360 hard drive which may result in the loss of Singleplayer data. The Title Update we release will eliminate this entirely.
In the meantime, it is recommended that while playing Split-Screen or System Link Co-Op games, you do not pick up Death Cards.
Loss of Multiplayer stats / rank:
The second bug, which pertains to loss of MP rank, is a very rare occurrence of data corruption that happens during transit of the profile data – this is not caused by game code, and Treyarch is not intentionally resetting the rank of any players. For the next patch/title update, we have added defensive measures to the game code to protect against stats resetting if a player’s profile data is corrupted in transit/storage.
Unfortunately, we cannot restore any previously lost / corrupted stats or rank data. However, after the next Title Update, this should no longer be a concern.
We understand that these issues have caused real frustration for the players who have been affected, and are working hard to get the Title Update finished as soon as possible. I’ll be keeping you updated to other confirmed fixes as they make the cut (including those darn under map glitches!).
Speaking of which, please visit the following thread to learn more about the patching / Title Update process as it pertains to consoles:

Thank you for your patience and continued support.
Regards,
-JD & The Treyarch team

TXSASQUATCH - Could you please tell me "when" this will be fixed?
Response (Armond Goodin) - 02/17/2009 08:45 AM
Yea, we know about the bug. We get plenty of calls everyday about it all over the world. But until Treyarch can pinpoint how to fix it, we all have to wait for a patch. Yes, I have had my rank reset too, but if I want it back I have to keep playing. Currently their is no word on when an update will come out.
So my last reply to this was clarification of what he meant about "having to keep playing the game". Now before anyone starts a rumor about anything, that could just be a metaphor from someone frustrated like the rest of us, obviously he's a gamer on WAW and a support tech for Activision, but also it could mean Treyarch is only fixing the resets for those who show active playing of this game...I'll let you know what he replies...
EDIT: latest news@11:30am TX time...
SASQUATCH - If you want your rank back you have to keep playing? Is that a metaphor or do you seriously mean one has to keep playing in order for this to be fixed by Treyarch?
Response (Armond Goodin) - 02/17/2009 09:00 AM
We have been on the phone with people playing, and suddenly they say "My rank came back!! Never mind".
It's a synchronization error with the Xbox and there Live server. Your online information is saved online. So when your Xbox can't get that information, you have to start at level one. When it does show up, you will have everything back.
So with that said, I guess when I get home I'll check and see what it says again. Maybe it's magically all fixed already, who knows?
